No, you're right...there's nothing new in the image above. Right now, Google Chrome has two separate menu icons in its top right corner: the wrench menu for options and settings and the page menu for functions like zooming, dev tools, and copy/paste.

A while back, I'd reported that changes were likely on the way, in the form of a single, unified menu. Google pitches minimalism as a central theme in Chrome, so it certainly makes sense to use as few UI elements as possible.

Take the jump to see the unified menu, which has just landed in the Chromium snapshot builds!

Here's the latest version as it appears in the current Chromium builds. As you can see, edit and zoom functions have been combined into single lines and all developer functions slotted into the tools menu.

One thing I don't like about the menu is that the extensions entry -- which used to be on the wrench menu below Downloads -- has been moved into the tools sub-menu. Sure, it's only one extra click but extensions was the one thing that I clicked on the wrench menu with any frequency.

There may, of course, be additional changes before the unified menu even makes the jump to the Chrome dev channel build.

What are your thoughts on the new menu? Better? Worse?

Heck, maybe you never bothered with either of Chrome's menus -- it's certainly possible to get along without them if you know your keyboard shortcuts.

Filed under: Design, Web services, Google
Typography on the web is a major source of difficulty for designers today. There are so few "web-safe" fonts, and there's no standard way to bring new ones into the equation. Well, Google has taken a big step toward addressing that problem, by introducing an open source font library, and an API that makes it easy to use the new fonts on your own webpage.

That means that along with Georgia, Arial and the rest, you're about to start seeing a lot more Droid Serif, Molengo, and Tangerine on the web. Along with the Google Font Directory and Google Font API, there's also a partnership with Typekit to create something called the WebFont Loader. The WebFont Loader is a JavaScript library that works with Google's API, but gives you more control over font loading, and even allows you to pull in fonts from other web-font sources.

Are you getting a lot of help desk support calls today? Blue screen of death? Disappearing icons? Weird keyboard problems? Chances are someone has played an April Fools' prank on your unsuspecting user. Yes, it's April 1 again. Check out Channel Insider's list of the top eight computer pranks that could be sprung on your innocent, naive users.

Meanwhile, at Google you'll find that Google is changing its name to Topeka, Google Apps now includes functionality that lets you upload anything (suggested use case - upload your luggage before a trip, access it when you arrive), and new Google Voice functionality adds the irritating problems you so sorely miss about your old voicemail system.

Elsewhere on the Web, Slashdot is talking about its long development and new addition of chat roulette functionality: "from now on all Slashdot stories will now be accompanied by a Roulette-style webcam video chat. In testing, we've discovered that Slashdot users are amazingly likely to engage in informative troll-free discussion when presented with the video image of one of their peers."

Also, one of my personal favorites, Starbucks said it would introduce the new Plenta and Micra sized beverages. The Plenta is 128 ounces and the Micra is 2 ounces, and are due to arrive at Starbucks stores in the fall.

Or take a look at the Twapler over at HowStuffWorks.com. This new high-tech stapler transmits the first 140 characters of every document you staple to all your Twitter followers.

Have you fooled anyone today? Seen any great pranks? Please share them in the comments.
